The H.E. Ralo Rigdzin Wangyal Dorje Rinpoche

H.E. Ralo Rigdzin Wangyal Dorje Rinpoche was born at dawn on August 8, 1933 (the year of the wood dog in the Tibetan calendar) in Pargon Dechen Kyiphug, Tibet.  This was the place where Sangye Lama, the first Terton, had been in retreat.  During the month of Ralo Rinpoche's birth, all the farms had great harvests and everyone believed that this was an auspicious sign.

Ralo Rinpoche grew up learning Tibetan Buddhism from his grandfather, Dhechen Rinpoche, and his father, Ralo Karma Vajra Rinpoche, descendants of the Ra Tobden Pawo lineage.

When he was eleven years old, Ralo Rinpoche went on a three-month retreat, where he recognized and gained profound insights into shunyata, Emptiness, andvowed to study the Dzogchen teachings.

When he was seventeen years old, Ralo Rinpoche went on a traditional three years, three months, and three day retreat, where he attained realizations of the Three Roots, Guru, Yidam, and Khandro.

At twenty-six, Ralo Rinpoche moved from Tibet to India, and then he accepted the invitation of the royal family of Bhutan to reside there.

At twenty-seven, he moved from Bhutan to Darjeeling, India to request teachings from H.H. Chatral Sangye Dorje Rinpoche, a great Dzogchen Master.

From H.H. Chatral Rinpoche, Ralo Rinpoche received the Dzogchen empowerments, oral transmissions, and instruction from him and went into retreat for another three years, three months, and three days.  After his retreat, he achieved Dzogchen realizations and received signs of accomplishment.

From the age of thirty-three to 44, Ralo Rinpoche received more Vajrayana teachings and completed the cycle of teachings on the Yidam Vajrakilaya in India and Nepal.

At about the end of Ralo Rinpoche's Yidam retreats, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, one the greatest Nyingma scholars and teachers of the 20th Century, asked him to go to Taiwan in response to requests for Tibetan Buddhist teachings.

This was the beginning of Ralo Rinpoche's teaching in Taiwan, where he established Dharma centers. He later traveled to many other places such as Hong Kong, Japan, and the United States, where he also gave teachings and established Dharma centers.

Ralo Rinpoche has studied with many of the greatest teachers of 20th Century Tibetan Buddhism including H.H. Dudjom Rimpoche, the XVIth Karmapa, Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro, and H.H. Penor Rinpoche.
