Khyungtrul Rinpoche is the 4th reincarnation of the Gyalwa Chowang who is the manifestation of Hayagrivajra. The 1st Khyungtrul Rinpoche, Gyalwa Choyang, is also one of Guru Padmasambhava's original 25 disciples.
He was the most outstanding Tibetan master of the last century, an authority on all traditions and a holder of all lineages. There were lot of students was studies and served at Khyungtrul Rinpoche's monastery in Tibet Khungpo Patam and Sibling monastery.
At the exact moment in this degenerate age when Khyungtrul Rinpoche was born, fireworks broke out everywhere in the village celebrating the mid-year festival which seemed to be an auspicious sign telling the people to celebrate the birth of a great Rinpoche.
H.E. Chatral Rinpoche gave the name Sangye Lhawang Namgyal to Rinpocheat the time of his first hair cutting ceremony. H.H. Dalai Lama bestowed the name Tenzin Kunkhen. H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche enthroned Rinpoche as Khyungtrul Rinpoche's reincarnation with traditional ceremonies in Shechen Monastery, Boudhanath, Nepal. At the age of 17 in Taiwan, he was publicly ordained as the Khyungtrul Rinpoche by H.H. Penor Rinpoche.
Rinpoche began is early education studying Buddhist philosophy and history and learning ritual symbols at Shechen Monastery and also from his uncle, the great teacher, Gen Chopel Lak. He received Kalachakra from H.H. Dalai Lama in Benares. He then studied the duties of Vajra Master (Dorje Lopon), Buddhist Yoga and Lama Dancing at Dudjom Monastery and went on to Study Buddhist philosophy in Bhutan.
From 2002 to 2005, Rinpoche entered the traditional three-years retreat under the guidance of H.H. Chatral Rinpoche, where he successfully practiced the Preliminary Practice and the Actual Practice, including the Great Perfection, Dzogchen.
In Rigzin Phodrang Monastery under his father, H.E. Ralo Rinpoche, Rinpoche studied medicine, mantra, higher Buddhist philosophy, Dzogchen, Dorje Gothrap, Vajra Armour. Rinpoche has received innumerable tantric empowerments and formal Buddhist teaching, mind instruction, and yoga by many great Rinpoches such as H.H. Dalai Lama, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, H.H. Penor Rinpoche, H.H. Kathok Moktsa Rinpoche, Thrinley Norbu Rinpoche, his beloved father Ralo Rinpoche and so many others.
From the age of 23, Rinpoche has been spreading teaching and taking care of monasteries, retreats, and centers all over the world. He has lately been working to preserve the ancient traditional Buddhist teaching, such as Jangter, Longchen Nyintik, Konchok Tsedue, especially the work written by his former incarnations such as Pema Kilaya and so forth.
